What is the difference between being an Interior Decorator vs an Interior Designer?
To become an Interior Decorator, training or schooling is not required and anybody could become an Interior Decorator without any training.
Interior Decorator most of the time only works with existing spaces with homeowners. The primary task of an Interior Decorator involves with the aesthetic of the space or enhancing the look of a space which include choosing color schemes, selecting furniture and light fixtures and various other decorating accessories.
To be an Interior Designer, training will be required as Interior Designer not only just deal with interior decorating but also many other responsibilities as well.
An Interior Designer not just work with existing spaces but also creates and plan spaces for both commercial and residential development. Commercial interior developments can include hotels, restaurants, offices, retails, hospitals, airplanes, cars etc.
Therefore, Interior Designer’s work not only involves with the aesthetic of the space but also the planning of spaces and its functions (including creating walls and removing walls etc), working with Contractors, consultants, Architects and Engineers to resolve construction and building/engineering issues, branding and graphics, millwork and furniture design, detail drawings, sketches and many more.

It is always a good practice to be more skillful as a Designer. If you are already an Interior Decorator or currently studying interior decorating, it is very beneficial and advantageous to learn some basic skills in interior design such as space planning, interior construction concepts, construction administration, object design, basic architectural and structural concepts, drafting, and even some 2D design etc. These additional interior design skills not only will enhance and support your interior decorating skills but will always expand your career, client base and as a result, be more profitable.
