Interior design phases consist of 3 main phases or stages. Each phase contains various important sub-phases. In this article, lets focus our attention and discuss the 3 main interior design phases only so you can get a general understanding of the main phases of interior design.
In any give interior design project rather it is a residential or commercial interior design project, the 3 main interior design phase are the same. The following are the 3 main phases:
Phase 1: Design
Phase 2: production of construction documents
Phase 3: Construction
Phase 1: Design
This phase is really the core of an interior design project where problems are and need to be defined and solved. If this interior design phase is done wrong, no matter how successful phase 2 or 3 are performed, the project will fail and your client will be very upset. Therefore, it is crucial that the interior design team, lead by the Interior Designer, must get this phase right.
Always remember this, even if the client sign-off and approves the proposed design, it doesn’t mean the design is right. Therefore, it is up to the interior team to complete the design phase and to ensure to meet the client’s and the project’s project statement, goals and objectives.
Phase 2: Production of Construction Documents
Once the design phase is completed, the production of construction documents or the contract documents starts. This is the interior design phase where the approved proposed design puts on paper in the form of drawings and writings or specifications by the entire design team. Sometime, final detail design of the project is also competed in this phase as well.
This interior design phase is also an important phase as documents produced in this phase represents the proposed design and will be used for pricing and also for the entire construction of the project. Therefore, it is important for the interior design team to produce a set of accurate construction documents. Any errors in the construction documents will increase risks to the entire project.
An Interior Designer must clearly understand the functions and roles of each of the 3 main phases and all the various sub-phases as well
Phase 3: Construction
This is the phase where the construction documents your team have produced will be sent off for pricing/bidding and final costing work. Once an exceptable bid/cost have been submitted and accepted by your client, the development will go to construction. However, if final costing is unacceptable by the client, the proposed design may need to be revised inorder to meet the client’s budget.
During construction, some or even many changes and clarification work maybe required. Therefore, the design team will continue to be involved during the construction phase as well.
Interior Design Phases Summary

Tips:
- by understanding the functions and roles of each of the phases, project risk can be reduced making the project more efficient and timely
- the Interior Designer is the team leader and must manage and coordinate the project properly and efficiently inorder to achieve a successful project
